Special Considerations
The area hosts modern lodging and laboratory facilities which provide an excellent forum for educational opportunities. College classes, student groups, conservation organizations, government agencies, and graduate students commonly use the refuge facilities to enhance their understanding of wildlife conservation.
There is an annual visitation rate of about 80,000. The refuge is likely to be busiest during summer months.
Visitors to state wildlife refuges need either a Wild Louisiana stamp or a current hunting or fishing license.
Restrictions
Commercial fishing is prohibited, but recreational fishing, shrimping and crabbing is allowed. While the refuge's primary purpose is land stewardship, it is also a major wetland research facility for the state.
No hunting is allowed on the refuge, but some regulated trapping is allowed for furbearers that could potentially damage the marsh.
