Birch Stand at Pughole Lake (MN)
This is a natural habitat for many of the animals and birds along the byway.
Location: Located east of the byway, between Lawrence and Doan lakes.

Black Spruce/Tamarack Bog Habitat (MN)
This drive-through site along the byway features some of the unique habitat of the area.
Location: Just north of Grand Rapids.

The first national forest established east of the Mississippi, Chippewa National Forest features abundant camping and water recreation.
Location: North-central Minnesota

Chippewa National Forest Ranger Station (MN)
This ranger station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Distance from byway: On the byway Directions: Located near Marcell at mile 28.7 on the byway.

An important chapter of American history took place here. First, the Day Lake CCC camp provided jobs. Later, it held prisoners of war.
Location: The Suomi hills parking lot for the Day Lake CCC Camp is 19 miles north of Grand Rapids along State Highway 38 on the west side of the road.

This is farming country where settlers tended to become permanent residents, far more so than other places on the Edge.
Location: Located at the end of the byway where Highway 38 intersects Highway 1.

Location: Located near US Highways 169 and 2 on 2609 County Road 76 in Grand Rapids.

Distance from byway: On the byway Directions: Watch for a county road on the east side of the byway at mile 30.5. The site is located several hundred feet to the east of the byway on the south side of the gravel road now called Jack the Horse Road.
