Named for small caves on its west side, Cave Rock features a tunnel that cuts through 25 yards of solid stone. The site is considered to be holy by the native Washoe Indians who put their deceased to rest in the cold waters below the outcropping.

The Pony Express Trail was crucial in East-West communication in the last 1800s. After some restoration efforts, 120 historic sites along the trail will be available for the public.
