Pyramid Lake Scenic Byway
Anaho Island National Wildlife Refuge, NV
President Woodrow Wilson established this refuge in 1913 as a sanctuary for colonial nesting birds, primarily American White Pelicans. The refuge is situated on Anaho Island within the 25-mile Pyramid Lake. During certain times of the year, there can be up to 10,000 birds in the area. Besides the pelicans the area is known for, three other species frequent the area: Double-crested Cormorants, California Gulls, Great Blue Herons, and Black-crowned Night-herons. To protect the nesting birds from intrusion, the island refuge is closed to the public. Interpretive panels at pullouts along the Pyramid Lake Highway give visitors information about Anaho Island.
