Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway
State: South Dakota
National Forest: Black Hills National Forest
Length: 68.0 mi / 109.4 km
Time to Allow: Allow four hours to drive the byway or one day to experience the entire byway.
This byway will lead you on a delightful adventure as it winds its way around spiraling "pig-tail" shaped bridges, through six rock tunnels, among towering granite pinnacles and over pristine, pine-clad mountains. Highlights include Mt. Rushmore, Harney Peak, Sylvan Lake, the Needle's Eye and Cathedral Spires rock formations.
The roads of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway spiral through the rocky crags of Black Hills National Forest, Custer State Park, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, defying imagination and providing access to some of the most beautiful landscapes in South Dakota. But none of this would have been possible without the influence of the byway's namesake, Senator Peter Norbeck.
The Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway is not just a fantastic drive filled with Wild West lore, towering granite pinnacles, inspiring rock-carved art, and incredible limestone cave formations; it also offers some of the best hiking opportunities in South Dakota. Come spend a day exploring the fabled Black Hills, where bison roam free and the Old West is very much alive.
