Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway
Crazy Horse Memorial, SD
This memorial will stand as a tribute to Native Americans. A work in progress, this mountain-sized monument celebrates the life of Crazy Horse, one of the greatest Native American leaders. When it is completed, it will be the largest sculpture in the world at 563' high and 641' long. Even now, Chief Crazy Horse is taking shape in the rock of the Black Hills. A perfect addition to Mt. Rushmore, the monument will pay tribute to another great leader.
Visitors to the memorial will learn about the process used in sculpting this monument while watching the actual work take place. While at the memorial, visitors may also choose to visit the Indian Museum of North America, the Native American Educational and Cultural Center, or the home, workshop, and studio of Korczak Ziolkowski, who was the original sculptor on the project.
The year 2002 marked the 20th anniversary of the death of Korczak Ziolkowski, who began the sculpture in 1948. His family continues the project today with great things in mind for this statue of huge proportions.
