Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway
Harney Peak, SD

Standing at 7,242 feet, Harney Peak is the highest peak east of the Rocky Mountains. On a clear day, visitors can see Mount Rushmore, only six miles from the peak. A trail beginning at Sylvan Lake will take visitors 6 miles to the summite of Harney Peak where the views are spectacular. Also at the summit is the CCC pump house that is featured on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Lakota people considered Harney Peak the center of the world. The peak is now named for General William Harney who mapped it in 1857. Its existence in the Black Hills is a source of awe to visitors who develop a new appreciation of mountain heights after a stop there.
