Millstone Valley Scenic Byway
Millstone Historic District, NJ

Millstone’s origins reach back to the mid-18th century, when it served as the county seat from the Old Somerset Courthouse. The Historic District includes several key sites including the Van Doren Farm and the Old Millstone Forge.

During the Revolutionary War, the Van Doren farm was transformed into a military hospital for American troops. The Old Millstone Forge, possibly the longest operating blacksmith shop in America, is thought to have been operating since before 1700 and remained active until 1959. Today the shop is open to the public as a museum and features smithing demonstrations.
