Millstone Valley Scenic Byway
East Millstone Historic District, NJ

Among the many buildings part of the East Millstone Historic District, crossing the Millstone River into East Millstone, the first building one encounters is the Bridgetender's House, which was built circa 1831.

Another memorable historic structure, the Van Liew Homestead, is a fine example of eighteenth century Dutch architecture and dates back to 1752. The main building, now known as the Franklin Inn, is currently operated by the Meadows Foundation as a used bookstore.

During the Revolutionary War, British General Charles Cornwallis took over Annie Van Liew’s house, using it as his headquarters for five days while several thousand of his British troops camped nearby in what is now known as Colonial Park.
