Route 1 - San Luis Obispo North Coast Byway
San Luis Obispo Historic Railroad District, CA
The Southern Pacific Railroad route across San Luis Obispo was established in May, 1894, and changed the face of the city. The railroad route also ushered the city into the industrial age. As the "coastal gap" was closed with routes from Los Angeles to San Francisco, the face of San Luis Obispo began to evolve. Large ranches were subdivided and new communities were established. A museum has been founded, the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum, as a nonprofit, educational museum for the public benefit. The museum preserves the railroad history of California and the Central Coast by collecting, restoring, displaying and operating historic railroad equipment.
