Independence Mine State Historic Park, AK
Located in Hatcher Pass in the heart of the Talkeetna Mountains, Independence Mine is a representative of Alaska's hard rock gold mining past. As many as 200 miners worked the mine during the 1920's and 1930's until its closure as a result of WWII. Facilities include a museum, hiking trails, and recreation gold panning. It has been proposed the old tunnels be retrofitted to allow mine tours in the future.
