Special Considerations
Weather conditions vary greatly on the Kaibab Plateau from season to season and hour to hour. The elevation changes between the Kaibab Plateau, Arizona Strip and Grand Canyons create conditions which vary from hot summers (100 degrees Fahrenheit) to cold winters (20 degrees Fahrenheit).
Summers on top of the plateau are pleasant with afternoon thunderstorms in late July and August. January is the coldest month with an average low of 16 degrees Fahrenheit. Spring comes very late to the higher elevations of the plateau, with final snowmelt usually in May. Spring and fall are the best seasons to visit the strip due to extreme summer temperatures and poor winter road conditions.
Be well prepared; carry water and emergency supplies. If you get into trouble, it can take two to three days for help to arrive.
Restrictions
Firewood can be gathered as deadfall; cutting standing trees, live or dead, shrubs or other vegetation is prohibited.
