Meteor Crater, AZ
Visitor Services

Meteor Crater has an excellent visitor center that provides an enjoyable educational experience in a modern facility. Inside the visitor center, travelers will find the Museum of Astrogeology, which includes displays on meteoritics and the mechanics of impact cratering, as well as an audio lecture.

Also included in the museum are two interactive computer displays that contain information and high-tech graphics on space, meteorites and asteroids, the solar system, and the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet that impacted Jupiter.

The visitor center movie theater shows the newly updated movie, Collisions and Impacts twice each hour.

The Astronaut Hall of Fame houses plaques showing pictures of all the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo crews, accompanied by descriptions of their flight accomplishments.

Four observation areas are provided behind the museum and actually allow you to view the crater from inside the rim. Although Meteor Crater is over 4,000 feet across, and 560 feet deep, the observation telescopes allow you a close up look at points of interest in the crater. Daily guided rim tours allow those with proper hiking shoes to venture about 1/3 mile around the crater rim. The tours leave hourly from 9:15 am until 2:15 pm, and last about 1 hour, weather permitting.

The Astronaut Memorial Park provides a clean, pleasant setting to just while away the time, or you may want to have a picnic with items from the well stocked snack bar.
