Historic Route 66
Canyon de Chelly National Monument, AZ

Canyon de Chelly (pronounced 'da shay') is one of the longest continuously inhabited places in North America. The monument preserves important archaeological resources spanning nearly 5,000 years of human occupation, including significant events in Navajo history.

Ancient ruins of the Anasazi people form the backdrop to the hogans and livestock pens of the Navajo People who live there today. The Canyon is a place of great beauty, boasting deep valleys, colorful ridges and Spider Rock, a thin monolith over 800 feet tall. From the southern rim, hike into the Canyon and visit the White Horse ruins which date back about 1,200 years.

The park includes a visitor center, museum, interpretive exhibits, educational talks, tours, hiking, horseback riding, camping, picnicking and the historic Thunderbird Lodge built in 1902.
