Historic Route 66
Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, AZ

The San Francisco Volcanic Field created a vast network of cinder cones and lava flows in and around Flagstaff. The rich soil created by these volcanos drew the ancient settlers to the region. Sunset Crater is the site of the most recent eruption in this volcanic field, having erupted between 1064-66. The eruption spread ash, cinder and lava flows across the immediate area, driving away ancient inhabitants. A newly remodeled visitor center has interpretive exhibits and films.
