Crowley's Ridge Parkway
Chalk Bluff Park, MO
The name Chalk Bluff is derived from the chalky white banks of clay along the St. Francis River. Chalk Bluff was one of the largest Civil War battles in Missouri history. The area was a transit point during the Civil War between northeast Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel. Here General Marmaduke raided into Missouri, fighting off pursuing Union troops. Here 5,000 confederate soldiers and 8,000 union soldiers fought to win the battle of Chalk Bluff. Today the battlefield remains undisturbed from housing, agriculture, and commercial development with areas for camping, picnicking, and RV services.
