Crowley's Ridge Parkway
Cache River National Wildlife Refuge, AR

Characterized by rivers, cypress-tupelo swamps, oxbow lakes and bottomland hardwood forests, the Cache River Wetlands support a tremendous array of wildlife species. Although most often noted as wintering grounds for tens of thousands of mallards, many other bird and wildlife species make the refuge their home for all or part of the year. Waterfowl, wading birds (e.g., Great and Snowy Egrets and Little Blue Heron) and songbirds may be seen seasonally while deer, coyote, and raccoon are found year-round. The refuge has been the site of much recent attention with the report of Ivory-Billed Woodpecker, a species thought possibly extinct. (Suggested search areas and appropriate field behavior are available from the headquarters.) During the warmer months, many different reptiles and amphibians are often observed.
