Fort Pierre National Grassland, SD
The 116,000-acre Fort Pierre (pronounced "peer") National Grassland is located in the transition zone between tall grass and mid-grass prairie in central South Dakota. It was named for a French fur-trading post established here in 1826. Publicly owned land is intermingled with private rangeland and crop fields of wheat, sorghum, and occasional sunflowers. The grassland is a popular area for birding, as Gyrfalcons, Ring-necked Pheasants, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Bald Eagles, owls, hawks, and raptors all frequent the area.
