Native American Scenic Byway
Fort Pierre Chouteau, SD

Fort Pierre Chouteau was at one point the trade capital of this area of South Dakota. For years during the 19th Century, traders, trappers, and settlers moved into the area, trading for necessities and attracting European settlers. Buffalo robes were one of the main goods bartered here, as they were both useful on the plains and popular back east. Today, the area is a National Historic Site and hosts several archaeological digs.
