Native American Scenic Byway - North Dakota
Sitting Bull Burial State Historic Site, ND

This site pays homage to Sitting Bull, the historical figure that would not give up his people's sacred land. This site marks the original grave of the famous Hunkpapa Sioux leader. The site is located on the western edge of Fort Yates. During the Ghost Dance unrest of 1890, an attempt was made to arrest him at his home on the Grand River in South Dakota. A skirmish ensued in which Sitting Bull was killed. He was later interred in the military cemetery adjacent to the fort. There is a marker on the site.
