Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway
Visitor Services
Big Bend Picnic Area consists of seven picnic sites with tables and various combinations of grills or Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) constructed fireplaces. There are vault toilets, but there is no water supply on site. Mowed grass paths lead to the center of the picnic area where there is a large grassy opening that could accommodate a group. From here a spectacular view is afforded, and on a clear day, Mount Rogers can be seen. At almost 4,000 ft. in elevation, the site offers climatic relief even during the warmest days of summer. This was once an important fire lookout location.
Dark Horse Hollow Picnic Area, while not directly on the byway, is an attractive picnic site adjacent to the paved road. It offers a swimming hole and small sand beach. Its close proximity makes it an alternative picnic stop for those traveling the byway.
