Makah National Salmon Hatchery (WA)
The fall, October and November, is when the Chinook Salmon, reared here on the Sooes River, return to spawn. Take a tour of the hatchery to learn more about this fascinating wildlife.
Location: North of Shi Shi Beach on the byway

This has been the center of the Makah Nation for thousands of years. Sea lions bark and feed in the marina between the fishing boats. The sun tiptoes on the ripples of the bay and the mountains of Vancouver Island sit on the northern horizon.

People have been fishing out of this bay for thousands of years. Theres something intoxicating about the reflections of fishing boats, all different, all worn by work and mottled by the elements.

Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (WA)
The Olympic Coast Marine Sanctuary covers more than 3,300 square miles, encompasses some of the last wilderness beaches in the country and provides habitat for rare and spectacular marine mammals and shorebirds.
Location: South of Tatoosh Island on the byway

The trail to Shi Shi is short from the north. The beach itself starts on Makah land and arcs south for two miles to Point of Arches.
Location: The southern-most point on the byway, south of Cape Flattery.

Tatoosh Island & Lighthouse (WA)
Just off shore, this island and its lonely lighthouse guard the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Thousands of nesting shorebirds call the outpost home. Scan the waves below for orca and gray whales, Tufted puffins and sea lions.
Location: The north-western end of the byway, just west of Cape Flattery.
