The Belle Boyd Cottage, one of the oldest buildings in Front Royal, operated as a hotel during the Civil War era. Managed by Boyd's aunt and uncle, the cottage was also home to the infamous Confederate spy for a short period during the war. Today, visitors can tour the period-decorated Cottage to learn about Boyd's life and her role in the Civil War as told by costumed interpreters.

The meadow is a popular spot for leaving your car and wandering among wildflowers and native grasses with many opportunities for spotting deer and enjoying the many bird species that congregate here.

Dickey Ridge is a popular first stop for visitors driving south along Skyline Drive from the north entrance.

Front Royal is one of many towns included in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, and is known as the gateway to the beautiful Skyline Drive and the Shenandoah National Park.
Distance from byway: On the byway Directions: Front Royal is the northern end of the Skyline Drive.

George Washington and Jefferson National Forests (VA)
These two forests stretch from one end of Virginia to the other, as well as extending into West Virginia, along the ruggedly beautiful Appalachians. Virtually every type of outdoor recreation activity you can imagine is available.

Continually open since 1806, the Grand Caverns was visited by both Confederate and Union soldiers during the "Valley Campaign."
Distance from byway: On the byway Directions: At Waynesboro, turn onto US 340 until you reach the Grottoes intersection with SR 256, travel West until the intersection of SR 256 and Dogwood Avenue. Turn Left on Dogwood and travel South on Dogwood Ave. Turn Right into the Entrance of Grand Caverns [Grand Caverns Drive].

Hazel Mountain/Pinnacles Area (VA)
This area encompasses a two mile stretch of the drive with magnificent views of the Piedmont areas to the east. It includes three large overlooks with interpretive signs.
Location: The Hazel Mountain/Pinnacles area is between mile-points 33 and 35.1 on Skyline Drive

The Lewis Mountain facilities date from 1940 when the initial park facilities were being completed.
Location: Located at mile 57.5 on Skyline Drive.

The trail was originally laid out to permit visitors to view beautiful stands of hemlocks.
Location: The Limberlost Trail is at milepoint 43.0 on Skyline Drive.

Discovered in 1878 by a tinsmith and local photographer, Luray Caverns is now the most popular cave in Eastern America.
Distance from byway: On the byway Directions: Take US 211 from the Skyline Drive, then turn off exit 264 to the Luray Caverns. The Caverns are located at 970 US Highway 211 West in Luray, VA.
