Established in 1901,Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge consists of 59,020 acres that host a rare piece of the past - a remnant mixed-grass prairie. This 'island' of natural prairie escaped destruction because the rocks underfoot defeated the plow. Wild, rugged, and weathered, it is a symbol of the Old West standing at the threshold of modern times.
