Special Considerations

The Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 makes destruction of sites a criminal offense.

When ascending the mountain, visitors should allow one hour to drive to the summit in a truck or four-wheel drive, and 45 minutes for an ATV or motorcycle.

The Observatory is closed to visitors for safety reasons but interpretative signs placed around the site explain its history.

Restrictions

This is a Type IV byway. The road leading to the Observatory is very rugged and steep in places. As there are problems with erosion and steep grades, only experienced four-wheel drivers should attempt this drive. If you are hesitant to take a car up the road, you can hike the trails to the Observatory instead.
