Special Considerations

The Lower Crooked River Back Country Byway is a Type I Back Country Byway. This double-laned road is paved from Prineville, Oregon to the Prineville Reservoir Bowman Dam, approximately 19 miles of the road. The road switches to a double-paved gravel for the remainder of the trip, but the grades do not exceed eight percent during the entire segment. Passenger vehicles can navigate the route without any difficulty.

The byway is open year-round but may close unexpectedly due to snow or mud during the year. Check the BLM Prineville District Homepage for more information.
