Special Considerations

The byway, though open all year long, is best driven in dry weather. Be prepared for rough roads in a remote setting.

There are no facilities or services along the byway. Make sure you have spare tires, plenty of gas and lots of water.

Restrictions

The route is a Type II road, composed of graded gravel and dirt. Half of it is maintained as a county road. There are no vehicle restrictions, though 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended, especially during wet weather.

The BLM asks that visitors enjoy, but do not destroy America's heritage. Cultural resources in this region are fragile, irreplaceable, and protected by law. Please note that digging or disturbing sites is illegal, and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act enforces penalties up to $250,000 and 5 years imprisonment for violators.
