Driving the Byway
Cumberland to Luke
- Start your tour in the Cumberland Narrows, where MD 36 meets Alternate US 40, or the Historic National Road.
- Continue north on MD 36 to Corriganville.
- Go west, still on MD 36 (Mt. Savage Road) through Mt. Savage to Frostburg.
- Drive east on Main Street, or the Historic National Road, about a half mile to continue south on MD 36.
- Continue south on MD 36 through the Alleghany Plateau.
- Continue through Midland, Lonaconing, Nikep, Barton, then Westernport and Luke.
Luke-Grantsville Loop
- In Luke, turn right on MD 135, or Main Street. Travel west through Luke, then take Savage River Road alongside the Savage River to the Savage River Reservoir.
- Continue past the reservoir and take the left fork onto Big Run Road through Savage River State Forest.
- Turn north (right) onto New Germany Road and go past New Germany State Park to join the Historic National Road.
- Go west to Grantsville, then turn south on MD 495 (Bittinger Road.)
- For now, continue on Bittinger Road past the Rock Lodge Road junction.
- Turn west onto Swanton Road.
- A few miles shy of Deer Park turn south (left) on ME 135.
- Take a small spur of the byway into Kitzmiller on MD 38 or Kitsmiller Road.
- Return to the MD 135/MD 38 junction and take MD 135 east into Luke to finish this loop of the byway.
Deep Creek Lake Loop
- At the MD 135/Swanton Road junction go west on MD 135 to Deer Park.
- Continue on MD 135 to Loch Lynn Heights.
- You can take a spur of the byway southeast to Potomac State Forest.
- Back at Loch Lynn Heights, go west through Mountain Lake Park and Oakland past the US 219 junction.
- Cross the Youghiogheny River and take Herrington Manor Road past Herrington Manor State Park.
- You can take a spur of the byway on Cranesville Road to Subarctic Swamp.
- Otherwise take Swallow Falls Road northeast and then Mayhew Inn Road west on your way to Deep Creek Lake.
- Take US 219 east toward Deep Creek Lake.
- For now go past MD 42.
- Cross Deep Creek Lake.
- Take the lake road on the eastern shore of the lake past Deep Creek Lake State Park.
- Continue north on Rock Lodge Road.
- At the junction with Bittinger Road you can continue north to Grantsville or south back to Deer Park or Kitzmiller.
Friendsville to Keysers Ridge
- From Deep Creek Lake take MD 42 north from the junction with US 219.
- Continue north past the junctions with Mosser Road and Garrett Highway on Friendsville Road to Friendsville.
- At Friendsville turn east onto the National Freeway (I-68) past the Youghiogheny Overlook Welcome Center.
- This section of the byway ends at Keysers Ridge.
