Special Considerations
Many edible plants can be collected in the forest. The morel mushroom is especially sought in the spring for its delicious flavor. Some mushrooms are poisonous. Identify the plant you pick before eating it. Commercial collectors must have a permit to collect and there are State of Indiana laws controlling the possession of some plants such as ginseng.
Poison ivy, ticks and poisonous snakes are part of the natural forest environment. Hunting is controlled by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. You must have a State of Indiana license to hunt. You'll find gates barring vehicle access in some places. By closing roads, natural conditions are protected.
