America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Outer Banks Scenic Byway
(North Carolina)
With the help of two ferries, drive the Outer Banks Scenic Byway to visit the beaches and see the ocean from the barrier islands. Along the way, visit wildlife refuges and get a great new perspective on the natural landscape of North Carolina. Stop at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge to see more than 350 species of birds, or check out the marsh and woodland habitats of Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge, where an abundance of flora and fauna take refuge. For a great view of the coast, check out the Swanquarter National Wilderness Area. If your looking for photo opportunities, spend a day at Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge, where there are over 240 species of birds. If you're looking for a little adventure, try Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Another safe haven for endangered species is Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, dedicated to protect and enhance the pocosin wetlands. Take a stroll through a levee forest, bottomland hardwood forest, or forested wetlands at the Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge.
