America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Woodward Avenue (M-1) - Automotive Heritage Trail (Michigan)

Woodward Avenue runs through the middle of the dense urban area of Detroit. Just south of the byway along the Detroit River lies the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. It is the only International Wildlife Refuge in North America. The refuge includes islands, coastal wetlands, marshes, shoals, and waterfront lands along 48 miles of Detroit River and Western Lake Erie shoreline. Its location is unique -- situated in the heart of a major metropolitan area. The purpose of the refuge is to protect and restore habitat for 29 species of waterfowl, 65 kinds of fish, and 300 species of migratory birds in Michigan.
