America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Byway (Florida)

Drive the Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Byway and meander through four wildlife refuges, several state and local parks, and sanctuaries. The Lagoon is home to more than 4,000 species of plants and animals. Sit on the beaches of the Archie Carr Refuge, famous for having the most productive sea turtle nesting habitats in the Western Hemisphere. If you come at the right time of the year, you may see the turtles laying their eggs or hatching. Visit Pelican Island, known for being the first National Wildlife Refuge, and watch the pelicans wing across the waters. The area not only protects pelicans, but it also houses several endangered species. St. Johns National Wildlife Refuge is closed to the public to maintain habitat for many species classified as threatened, endangered, and species of special concern. Stop at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge to wander the nature trails and see the real Florida.
