America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Santa Fe Trail (Colorado and New Mexico)

Santa Fe Trail, one of America's first great trade routes, features historic sites and landmarks such as Bent's Fort, Raton Pass, Fort Union, Point of Rocks, Santa Fe, and Trinidad. Be sure to enjoy the scenery and the landscape's mountain ranges and wide plains. Embark on a lesser-known adventure and visit the wildlife refuges on the New Mexico section of the byway. About 20 miles north of Springer, Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge will offer you a great range of wildlife watching. See Bald and Golden Eagles, falcons, hawks, Sandhill Cranes, American White Pelicans, ducks, Burrowing and Great Horned Owls, coyote, black-tailed prairie dogs, mule and white-tailed deer, and even elk. Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge, located just east of Las Vegas, covers over 8,600 acres and provides a safe and important habitat for over 270 bird species.
