America's Byways and National Wildlife Refuges
Wetlands and Wildlife Scenic Byway
(Kansas)
Drive the Wetlands and Wildlife Scenic Byway through radiant wetlands filled with a variety of wildlife, past prairie vistas and vast skies, passing rural communities shaped by nature and the entrepreneurial spirit. Here, you'll see clouds of Sandhill and Whooping Cranes, as well as pelicans, Bald and Golden Eagles, shorebirds, ducks, and geese. Make sure to stop at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, located on the southern branch of the byway. Bring a camera or a pair of binoculars; the refuge has two large salt marshes that showcase Mallards, Wood Ducks, pintails, White Pelicans, shorebirds, and more. Hunting, fishing, and environmental education are also available at the refuge.
