Seaway Trail Harvest Berry Ice Cream on Globetrotting Writer’s NY Detour

A taste of what may be the only ice cream custom-made for one of America’s Byways is part of globetrotting writer Bruce Northam’s 23-day New York Detour. Northam, who has visited more than 100 countries on seven continents, is making an overland tour of New York State for a new television series. On Thursday, June 15, he will drive part of the Seaway Trail with narration by Seaway Trail, Inc. Executive Director Teresa Mitchell. His afternoon visit to Sackets Harbor includes a tour of the Seaway Trail Discovery Center and a stroll across the street to Karen’s Ice Cream Factory for a taste of Seaway Trail Harvest Berry Ice Cream. The Seaway Trail byway along the St. Lawrence River-Great Lakes freshwater shoreline has the distinction of being named New York State’s first National Scenic Byway.

Among Northam’s other Seaway Trail experiences on the tour:

  • a 65 mile per hour jet boat tour of the Niagara River,
  • bicycle taxi and boat tour rides in Buffalo,
  • the International Jazz Festival in Rochester,
  • a chat with Seaway Trail, Inc. President Chuck Krupke in Pulaski,
  • a visit aboard the tall ship Nina in Oswego,
  • and an antique speedboat ride to Singer Castle.

The Seaway Trail destinations are part of a 2,000-mile tour designed by I Love New York tourism promoters for Northam, a native New Yorker, to rediscover his own backyard, and revive public interest in freestyle touring travel throughout the Empire State.
