mssuzieq on August 27, 2009 (traveled on August 17, 2009)Approximately 10+ miles of this roadway is currently under construction. The last 5 miles up and then the first 5 miles down (the entire summit) is loosely packed gravel. You have a pilot truck leading one line up and one line down at a time. Wait time can be up to... mustang1966 on August 27, 2009 (traveled on August 6, 2009)While motorcycling over the Beartooth, I punched two holes in the sidewall of my motorcycle's rear tire. It went down right at the Top of the World store. Lucky for me another rider had a plug kit and air compressor.
As we were trying to fix the tire a thunder... [more]
AndrewDuluth on April 20, 2009 (traveled on August 10, 2008)This is one of the most beautiful places in the world that you can drive to. Last summer we camped for five days at one of the gorgeous National Forest campgrounds south of Red Lodge and drove up the switchbacks nearly every day to hike and hang out above treeline. Gorgeous!
Pitchfork1 on November 6, 2008 (traveled on June 26, 2008)Charles Kuralt had it right when he said this is one of the most spectacular drives in the country. Heading out of Red Lodge, Montana it's hard to tell what you're in for, but WOW! - what a climb up to the Beartooth Pass. This is some of the most beautiful country in... [more]
DubTraveller on September 9, 2008 (traveled on August 9, 2008)What a beautiful stretch of road! We did not know we were going to get such a treat on our drive from Billings to Silver Gate. What a truly gorgeous world we live in.
guybo on September 2, 2008 (traveled on July 29, 2008)By far the BEST biking road I have ever been on!!!
Heather_with_the_Mini on August 25, 2008 (traveled on August 17, 2008)14 Mini Coopers, owners and lovers all came together for a fun-filled day of Beartooth Highway Motoring! Knowing how well our cars handle curves and corners we ventured out to test the curves for ourselves. We (everyone and every car) had a blast and are looking forward to more adventures soon! :)
wally on August 4, 2008 (traveled on August 2, 2008)I have heard for years that this is the most beautiful Byway in America. I am convinced. It was a stunning experience.
songs4kids on July 15, 2008 (traveled on June 15, 1971)During my childhood my family traveled over many Colorado mountain passes as we went camping. Dad tried to pull a camper with a V-6 station wagon and we spent many an hour pulled over on the side of the road waiting for the overheated engine to cool. As a... [more]
luckydawg75 on July 3, 2008 (traveled on September 30, 2007)It was an extreme white knuckle event, but one that I will cherish forever. My wife & I were heading to Jackson Hole, WY from Billings, MT because we wanted to go through Yellowstone. We chose Billings, because it seemed the NE entrance to Yellowstone provided us... [more]
geoqueen on May 25, 2008 (traveled on June 6, 2006)I had visited this byway in 2003 and I did a summer geology field camp outside of Red Lodge in '06. What a beautiful place to see and spend time in. I could never get tired of driving over that road and seeing the views from there. And what a difference at ~11K... [more]
subcommander on March 12, 2008Wife freaked out! Didnt know it was there! Coming out of Yellowstone in beat-up jeep, heading to florida, we got surprised by the 70 mph no guardrail hairpin turns, and the clouds below us! Wife said it's the most frightened she has ever been in a car. Found out a... [more]
msbiker on February 23, 2008 (traveled on July 7, 2006)We rode our motorcycles (seven of us on seven Harleys) over Beartooth Hwy in the summer of 2006. What an experience! The night before we stayed in Hardin, MT and our next stop was to be Cody, WY. I had expressed some concern about the mountains to the group but was... [more]
LuvUSA on February 17, 2008 (traveled on August 31, 2007)We travelled through the Beartooth Pass en route from Idaho Falls to the Little Bighorn Battlefield site. The weather during the morning while we travelled through North Yellowstone Park was rather wet and it wasn't looking good for the Pass. However, in the nick of... [more]
Top_Down_PT_Over_The_Pass on February 4, 2008 (traveled on September 27, 2007)After seeing Yellowstone National Park, it's hard to believe that anything else could be as spectacular. Traveling the Beartooth Highway over Beartooth Pass changed our minds. PT Cruiser convertible, top down, perfect sunny day, not too hot, not too cold, the only... [more]
CastellanosML on August 15, 2007 (traveled on June 26, 2007)My husband and I traveled the Beartooth Highway as part of a 17-day adventure across the United States on a Harley. There are few words to describe the experience and beauty that is the Beartooth. We were the only ones on the road first thing in the morning. There... [more]
Cassie on August 3, 2007 (traveled on June 15, 2007)Greetings from Scotland!
My husband and I first did the Beartooth Pass two years ago (at about the same time of year) but due to a major landslide we were unable to travel right over to Red Lodge.
This year the road was completely open and we were able to... [more]
KPP on July 11, 2007 (traveled on July 7, 2007)A wonderful drive up through the Beartooth pass with many photo opportunities all the way to Cooke City. Followed by a drive down the scenic Chief Joseph Highway to Cody. A great alternative for those who don't have the time to visit Yellowstone. Roads in excellent condition, and many beautiful photo opportunities!
bhope54 on July 4, 2007 (traveled on June 28, 1999)The Beartooth Highway was reminiscent of the Troll highway in Norway we visited last summer, but higher and better because as my 16 year old said, "It's in the USA!"
White knuckle driving once through the Shoshone National Forest and climbing up you end up at the... [more]
bel007 on January 10, 2007 (traveled on August 24, 2006)We traveled to the Beartooth and the Chief Joseph Hwy with 4 other couples on a 4000-mile motorcycle trip. The Beartooth Highway was one of the many highlights of our trip, and we plan on returning in August of '07.
There are few words to describe this pass,... [more]
born2drive on August 24, 2006 (traveled on July 18, 2006)The Beartooth Highway is about the most beautiful drive in North America. It is a real find. The drive is one continous gorgeous scene after another without a break. In terms of mileage, this is a short drive, but allow yourself 2.5 to 3 hours to complete the... [more]
Marsh on May 9, 2006 (traveled on June 20, 2001)I can't describe the view while traveling the Beartooth Hwy. It's unbelievable how far the eye can see when you get to the top. You are literally on top of the world. We are going back in June of this year and I cannot wait. It's better than Disney World!
lmt91127 on August 11, 2005Our experience on the Beartooth Highway was amazing. Myself, my husband and 2 boys were traveling throughout the Midwest. We had spent time in Yellowstone, but it was overcrowded and frustrating. We decided to venture outside the park and head north towards... [more]
anon-e-moose on January 16, 2005 (traveled on June 3, 2004)The climb to the top via the Beartooth Highway is not for the faint of heart; the hairpins are indeed hairy. It was, however, worth every second of the fear I experienced on the way up for the spectacular vistas at the top. Sadly, even at the beginning of June,... [more]
rbull on December 7, 2004 (traveled on October 14, 1996)Starting out from Cooke City before daylight, we enjoyed the Beartooth Highway as twilight slowly revealed shapes and colors of the ranchlands along the way and the mountains above them, until the morning sun broke through, lighting up the heights and working its way... plntguyc on August 17, 2004 (traveled on August 16, 2004)We followed the AAA-recommended 'shortest route' to Minnesota through Yellowstone via Hwy 212. That was all we knew about it. As we climbed steadily higher we noticed tall sticks beside the road. Those were because of the snow depth in winter so they can find the... [more]
hansjorn on July 10, 2004 (traveled on June 28, 2004)Travelling from Dickinson, ND, to Yellowstone National Park, we wanted to enter Yellowstone Park via its northeast gateway. An Anonymous Traveler on September 8, 2003One of our all time favorite camping experiences was at Island Lake campground on the Beartooth Highway. A wonderful (easy) trail goes past several, small chain lakes to a waterfall. We suggest this scenic byway to everyone we know traveling close to it.
