A Traveler's Experience
swc on October 7, 2004 (traveled on March 10, 2004)A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway (FL)
Last spring I had a change to drive A1A with some good friends. We walked along the beach, visited Fort Matanzas, stopped at Marineland, and browsed some unusual antique shops in St. Augustine. My favorite two places were the St. Augustine Lighthouse and the Fountain of Youth. The lighthouse's museum was fascinating and grounds around the lighthouse were well kept. The spiral staircase to the top of the lighthouse is a sight to behold that is only surpassed by the incredible view at the top. The Fountain of Youth was equally enjoyable. We arrived there just after it closed, but Jerry, the caretaker, agreed to take us on a quick behind-the-scene tour. Thanks, Jerry, for your wonderful hospitality!
