A Traveler's Experience

North Shore Drive is not to be underestimated. One must allow plenty of time to enjoy it. It's punctuated by a series of small lakeshore state parks, all of them interesting in their own right. They feature colorful rivers tumbling their way into Lake Superior, dyed rust by iron ore and tannic acid. The little villages along the shore have their own charm. Grand Portage National Monument, at the end of the drive, cannot be rushed through. One should plan on spending at least a full hour there. The Monument is a departure point for voyages out to Isle Royale National Park. The park is a desirable destination, and the North Shore Drive is an enjoyable way of getting there.
