A Traveler's Experience

Our experience on the Beartooth Highway was amazing. Myself, my husband and 2 boys were traveling throughout the Midwest. We had spent time in Yellowstone, but it was overcrowded and frustrating. We decided to venture outside the park and head north towards Montana. It was late early evening and I thought we should head back to our campground before it got too late. I didn't want to travel the same route we had been on, so I searched for a "shortcut". We ended up on the Beartooth Highway as the sky grew dark. We had no idea where we were and the road just continued to go up and up, switchbacks winding through the mountain. There were no lights visible for miles to be seen. Every so often we would see a campfire way off in the distance, but no signs of civilization anywhere! As it grew darker, I noticed what I thought was a tower light at the top of the mountain. It seemed like we would never get to the top. Finally, as we approached the top, I realized it wasn't a tower light, it was a star. It felt as if we were driving to heaven itself! The beauty of a clear night and the lack of civilization couldn't have been a better way to spend our night! For anyone who has ever traveled the Beartooth by day, try it by night - it is truly a magical experience!
