A Traveler's Experience
roar66 on April 23, 2008Historic Route 66 (AZ, IL, NM, OK)
We took our little Mustang convertible the entire length of Route 66, using maps showing the various iterations of the route as time passed and the route itself was modified. We spent nearly a full month on the America's Main Street, without any time or schedule constraints.
What a blast!
From downtown Chicago, through small-town -- even ghost-town -- America to Santa Monica, passing a world long thought lost. We celebrated historic mining union activism in southern Illinois, crossed Native American lands in New Mexico and stood on a corner in Winslow, AZ.
We toured a round barn, had lunch in just about the only commercial building still standing in Depew, OK and were mesmerized by the historical content of the Navajo Museum in Gallup, NM.
What a thrill -- it has been two years past, I was immediately (and remain) ready to roll again -- down the Mother Road........
What Others Have Said
CCJulian on September 24, 2009Take a drive from Oatman, AZ to Kingman, AZ when the full moon is rising. If you hit Oatman just after it has risen above all of the hills and mountains then the last 30 minutes of your drive is watching the moon rise between the hills as you drove the switchbacks. So many views of the moon and the desert as you turn with the road. Awesome!
