A Traveler's Experience

I recently cycled the International Selkirk Loop, through British Columbia, Washington, and Idaho. Along with my two sisters, we started our trip in Nelson, BC and 5 days later, finished in Nelson. It's a great loop to cycle and we thought of a couple things to pass onto others who might be considering cycling the Loop.
Starting in Nelson, you can opt to take the Northern Burlington Rail-to-Trail route that runs from Nelson to Salmo. It's a bit of a challenge to navigate the hills in Nelson to reach the start of the trail but well worth it! It's very scenic and there are a couple places to easily exit the trail and rejoin the highway prior to reaching Salmo if you choose.
Once we reached Ione, Washington on our second day, we opted to cross the river and cycle on LeClerc Road. It parallels the highway all the way to Newport. It's very scenic and had very little traffic.
If you're in need of any bike service,we highly recommend Larry at Competitive Instincts, Bike Sales and Service. He's located in Sandpoint, Idaho. You can't miss his sign as you enter Sandpoint either on the highway or the bike path that parallels the highway starting in Dover. He went above and beyond our expectations to get us serviced and ready to get on the road again. Very helpful, friendly and well experienced in bike service.
We would also recommend the Northside School B&B in Bonner's Ferry, Idaho. Easily accessed right off the highway once you cross the bridge. Very unique setting and beautifully done rooms. Heated pool, hot tub and a great breakfast. It was a real treat after three days of cycling!
Cycling along Kootenay Lake from Creston to the Balfour Ferry is very scenic and well worth the workout your quads will get on the hills! There are limited places to stay along this stretch so plan accordingly.
We would highly recommend cycling this route - it's very scenic and made for very enjoyable cycling. Traffic wasn't a big problem and we got lots of honks and waves of encouragement along the way.
