A Traveler's Experience

Using the map, it was awesome to start at the North entrance and work my way down. From Fargo, I took I-94 to Valley City then went to the North entrance. I started the byway at 9 and ended in Lisbon shortly around 4.
I did stop at every place on the map. The schoolhouse along the road, does not open up to tour until the 29th. The signs at each stop are detailed accounts that are a great read.
It is a little easy to get lost in the Pyramid Hill/Ft Ransom area, so here's what you should do: At the T, turn left to go to the Walker area and up the hill to the actual fort, then go back the way you came from and make your way past Pyramid Hill and on to the rest of the trip -- this would have been the right at the T and the Viking.
It does seem as though at times you are driving into somebody's yard or you stop at a few active churches and people look at you - but it is okay, people in the area are friendly. Just make sure you /do/ stop, because the signs (which are very easy to find) are a great reading resource.
When you get to near the end (Lisbon area), be careful -- the southern gate ends at a golf course and there are golfers crossing the street. Also be on the lookout for wild game throughout the whole trip. A very nice and pleasant day trip.
While much of this trip was on gravel, it was very compacted and made the trip nice. It should be noted that it is best to go in late spring due to possible flooding of the Sheyenne River.
