California's Highway 1 from San Luis Obispo up through Carmel is some of the most beautiful country on Earth. Go during the summer, and splurge on a convertible. Don't be in a hurry - much of the highway is twisty, with sharp drop-offs into the Pacific Ocean below. I almost drove off the road several times, because the scenery is so fantastic - mountains plunging into the sea, coastal fog parting to reveal golden brown hills dotted with grazing cattle--and the light! I'll never forget it.
