The sparkling waters and sandy shores of Pyramid Lake shine like a brilliant jewel in desert sand. Marvel at the tufa rock formations made from calcium carbonate deposits formed from precipitation over hot springs. Pyramid Lake Byway travels along the southern region of the lake from Sutcliffe, to fish hatcheries, Nixon, the Pyramid, Anaho Island, and then to Dodge and Wadsworth. The most astonishing attraction at Pyramid Lake is not the lake itself, but its namesake, the pyramid-shaped rock formation that juts up from the water. The pyramid continues to be one of the most photographed attractions of the Nevada landscape.
Anaho Island is one of the only pelican nesting sites in North America. Though the island remains off-limits to the public to ensure the pelicans' privacy, make sure to bring your binoculars. Enjoy the rest of the plant and animal life along the outskirts of the lake. As the lake is the only water source for miles, its shore sustains life for deer, antelope, bighorn sheep, and migrating waterfowl. Participate in the most popular sport around and cast your fishing line into the crystal clear waters and pull back a Lahontan cutthroat trout.
