Travel America's Byways and see some of the most captivating landscapes and interesting wildlife the country has to offer. From rugged mountain peaks to the crashing waves of the ocean, the beauty and diversity of nature can be seen on America's Byways.
For a truly unique experience, spend a day or two alligator hunting on the Creole Nature Trail in Louisiana. Chances are, you won't have to look far to capture your first gator! Just watch for the alligator crossing signs in several places along the road. These once endangered amphibians are now plentiful in the wetlands along the byway and will often step right into your path. Seize the opportunity and shoot -- with your camera, of course -- a close-up of a live alligator. But don't get too close!
Travel the Route 1 - Big Sur Coast Highway and the Route 1 - San Luis Obisbo North Coast Byway in California and catch a glimpse of mighty humpback whales from many of the turnouts along the road. Or visit Monterey Bay and spend the afternoon watching them feed in the bay. Drive further north on the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway in Oregon and watch the whales pass by during migration. On the east coast, you can often see humpback whales from points along the Acadia Byway in Maine.
If you like to interact with these mighty creatures and other ocean wildlife, be sure to visit Alaska's Marine Highway. From the ferries on this unique Byway, you might observe humpback and gray whales. The whales often approach boats for "friendly" encounters. They might rub up against your boat, roll on one side and "wave" a flipper, and peek at you with one eye open, perhaps looking up at you and your fellow passengers. A perfect photo opportunity!
Travel Scenic Byway 12 in Utah and Dinosaur Diamond Prehistoric Highway in Utah and Colorado and see some of the country's most amazing natural structures. You will gaze in awe at the balanced rocks and pinnacles and over 2,000 natural sandstone arches that stand in striking grandeur against the southern Utah sky. Travel through several national parks that preserve the beauty and geological history of the area, including Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon and Escalante. You may need several days to see all these byways have to offer; these natural wonders extend across several million acres of land.
These byways are a photographer's dream come true. Bring along plenty of film and capture these unique natural wonders; you'll definitely want to take them home with you.
