Diverse Opportunities Along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway

Updated Apr 1, 2013

Explore the wonder and beauty of a dramatic volcanic landscape on Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, an All-American Road which stretches from Crater Lake in Oregon to Mount Lassen in California, making this byway America's Volcano to Volcano highway. The volcanic activity of the past has created exquisite geological formations such as deep craters, jagged mountains, wavy lava flows and lava tube caves. Old lava flows topped with dense forests stand as hills, ridges, and islands in the midst of broad wetlands and habitat areas, pastoral grasslands, farms and ranches, and well-managed timber resource lands. A Geology Tour produced by the byway outlines 26 of the byway's most fascinating geologic features.

The byway offers much more than fascinating volcanic geology and scenery. The beautiful green forests and mountains along the byway are home to ski slopes and hiking trails (such as the nationally recognized Pacific Crest Trail.) Go fishing and kayaking in clear, cool mountain streams and lakes. View hundreds of species of wildlife in any of the several Wilderness Areas, National Forests, Wildlife Refuges, and other public lands along the byway

Over one million birds fly over the waters of Klamath Lake during peak migration in the fall. Savor the beauty of the lake's Pelican Bay, which inspired John Muir (naturalist, writer, conservationist, and founder of the Sierra Club) to write The Story of My Boyhood and Youth. Watch for birds or dangle a line in one of the six national wildlife refuges in the Klamath Basin, reported to be favorite fishing spots of President Roosevelt. Search for your own treasured hideaway along the 500 miles of diverse landscapes which make up the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway.
