Experience the country's military history on America's Byways. All across the United States are locations of battles and military history, which are important to understand the country's past. Walk in the footsteps of soldiers along one of the many battlefields or forts, and visit local museums and interpretive centers to learn about these important moments.

History buffs will want to visit the Lakes to Locks Passage in New York, as it weaves past forts and battlefields from three wars: The French and Indian War, The Revolutionary War, and The War of 1812. The Saratoga Battlefield is along the byway; this major engagement is considered the turning point for Americans in the Revolutionary War. Visitors will also want to explore Fort Ticonderoga, which was the site of a major battle between the French and English during the French and Indian war, as well as the first American victory of the revolution.

Civil War sites are also found along some of the America's Byways. The Creole Nature Trail in Louisiana, for example, was the site of several battles. After the battle over Calcasieu Pass, the dead from both sides were buried in unmarked graves on Monkey Island, and they are commemorated with a monument at Cameron Parish Courthouse. Browse these byways to explore sites of America's military past.
