All road trippers have a sense of adventure, but some travelers are looking for something more extreme. For you're a traveler looking for a rush, America's Byways are home to some exciting adventure activities.
Fayetteville, West Virginia is just five miles from the Midland Trail National Scenic Byway and boasts the longest single-span steel arch bridge in the world. Each year, more than 200,000 people watch as B.A.S.E. jumpers skydive off the bridge to the river below. At this height, a jumper has less than seven seconds to deploy a parachute for a safe landing.
The Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway in Oregon and California offers a number of opportunities for mountaineering, but one of the most popular spots is Mount Shasta. The summit stands at 14,000 feet and it takes climbers one to two days to reach the top. With more than 17 routes to the summit, there are options for beginners and experienced mountain climbers alike.
If whitewater is your thing, then you'll love the Animas River by the San Juan Skyway. The upper river boasts Class IV and V rapids which will challenge the most experienced kayakers. Additionally, those who want vertical challenges should check out the only man-made ice climbing park in the world, also along the San Juan Skyway.
