Outdoor recreation found along America's Byways goes beyond hiking and camping. Come explore the countless reasons to spend time outdoors near the byways, from a relaxing trip on horseback to the exhilaration of hang gliding.

Canter Through the Outback

There is no better way to experience Hells Canyon Scenic Byway in Oregon than on horseback. Come ride the many horseback riding trails throughout the Oregon portion of Hells Canyon, each one winding through beautiful dense forest areas not accessible by car. Take the opportunity to gallop along some of the most beautiful areas of the backcountry and spot bighorn sheep, bear, and deer in their natural settings. Many of the trails also run past remains of old mining sites, ranches, and homesteads. If hunting is your interest, the hunting opportunities in Hells Canyon are regarded as some of the best in the country, as the secluded areas are perfect for deer, elk, bear, cougar, and bighorn sheep.

If you'd like to see the country from an entirely new perspective, Oregon has even more. Referred to as the "Hang Gliding Capital of the West," the Outback Scenic Byway is the destination for daredevils and thrill-seekers. Designated hang-gliding areas have been created and are maintained periodically, but the level of difficulty at each site can only be determined by the weather that day. Be prepared for sudden changes in wind and some of the most awe-inspiring views you will ever see.

Seek adventure underground at the Historic Bluff Country Scenic Byway in Minnesota. Because of its proximity to two caves, spelunking, or cave exploration, is a popular activity if you want to beat the heat and create wonderful memories. Be sure to visit Mystery Cave and Niagara Cave, two of the most fascinating geological wonders you will find. Mystery Cave at the Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park contains rare stalactites, stalagmites and underground pools throughout the underground network. Niagara Cave near Harmony is full of exciting features, such as a 60-foot waterfall, 400 million year old fossils, and a wedding chapel!

The mountains of Colorado offer unprecedented outdoor adventure, especially along Gold Belt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway. If you love mountain climbing, you will delight in the challenging limestone cliffs of the Shelf Road Recreation Area. Known as a "Sport Climber's Mecca," this area contains 1000 physically demanding routes for expert climbers that will really test your limits.

No matter what byway is in your travels, you will be sure to find an outdoor activity to suit your fancy and spirit - from spectacular photo-ops to adventures bordering on extreme.
