Romantic Escapes

The cold winter months offer a great excuse for a cozy romantic getaway. Whether it's spending a weekend away from the kids or celebrating an anniversary, America's Byways offer some fantastic destinations for a special trip.

New Englanders will want to explore the 108-mile White Mountain Trail in New Hampshire. Surrounded by more than 20 mountains that top 4,000 feet, it is little wonder that writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne and 19th Century American landscape painters like Thomas Cole were inspired by these views. Outdoor activity lovers have loads of options with downhill and cross-country skiing. At the end of the day, what could be better than warming up in front of a fireplace in one of the area ski lodges?

In Kentucky, the Country Music Highway winds through the valleys and vistas of Eastern Kentucky, an area better known as home to music stars and legends like Loretta Lynn, the Judds and Dwight Yoakam. Travelers can experience the region's rich music history by stopping to see a show in Ashland at the Paramount Theater, which first opened its doors in 1931. After the show, why not stay at one of the local family inns?

And for those who enjoy unique accommodations with lots of local flavor, you will want to tour the Great River Road in Illinois. In the town of Galena, the self proclaimed "Bed and Breakfast Capital of the Midwest," there are over 50 inns and guest houses to choose from. Along the way, visitors can view spectacular bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River or explore one of the many charming and historic river towns.
